Poor old Fergie. Seems as if nobody is quite believing what he is saying at the moment (and if they are, they shouldn't). Perhaps Fergie really did want the Reds to beat Chelsea, but the notion of Ferguson sitting in his Cheshire mansion on Sunday afternoon cheering on the Pool does seem somewhat unlikely. And in any case, he can't have enjoyed being proved wrong, having assured reporters on Friday that Liverpool did not possess the quality to win.
Thanks for the advice, Sir.
Now Gabriel Heinze has accused Ferguson of a tale of "absolute fiction"in telling The Times the defender only went to Real Madrid last summer so he could persuade Cristiano Ronaldo to follow.
And are there still doyens of Fleet Street taking seriously Ferguson's claim, made after the Celtic match last week, that he wanted to pair Dimi Berbatov with Carlos Tevez but "hadn't had the chance yet" after he then omitted the Argentine again at Everton? Even when Sir was forced to take off Rooney because of his crass idiocy, Nani was introduced in his place while Tevez sat idle. Just a few days before, in another dummy that the media fell for, Ferguson made it crystal clear that Ronaldo would not play against the Scottish champions. And, of course, he did.
So what's going on?
One explanation is that Ferguson, aside from having greater skill with porkies than a pig farmer, is proving himself a hypocrite. After all, it was just four weeks ago that he told the press: "I gave you access in South Africa and I shouldn't have given you access. It won't happen again."
But let's just remember the exact words Ferguson used to introduce news of his latest boycott:
"You will never get any help out of me again."
And in that, and only that, he's been as good as his word.
So has Ferguson decided that revenge is a press conference spelt misleading? The wily old rascal...
